SCD PE staff lead 'The 2.6 Challenge' to save UK Charities !
Many fundraising events in the UK have been postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many charities across the UK struggling to maintain their services due to the lack of income. As a result of the cancellation of so many mass participation events the 2.6 Challenge was launched this month to support the charities that would have benefitted from the London Marathon. The challenge asked people to help their chosen charity by taking part in an activity base around the numbers 2.6 or 26 on Sunday 26th April 2020 - the day on which the London Marathon was due to be held this year.
Several SCD staff members were planning to take part in this prestigious event, including Head of PE faculty, Mr Birkett. PE staff and other school staff, including Headteacher Mr Sutherland, supported Mr Birkett in taking part in the 2.6 Challenge yesterday. Mr Birkett is raising funds for CRY - a charity helping to reduce cardiac risk in the young. Mr Birkett ran around his local green 26 times, supported by his two young daughters both running 2.6 miles, his son aiming to shoot 26 penalties and a balloon challenge (not dropping it 26 times), and wife Alex taking part in a 26 minute HIIT class. Fellow PE staff members joined in the fun (and hard work!) by performing their own challenges; Mr Conway ran 26 laps of his local park - Mr Watkinson completed 26 hill sprints - Mrs Edwards completed 26 forward rolls – her daughter Niamh and son Finn ran 2.6 miles - Miss Tucker smashed 260 sit ups and 2600 compressions - Miss Clarke nailed 260 burpees - Mr Brown joined in with an impressive 2.6 minute plank and Mr O’Dowd ran a 5k on Marathon Sunday! Last, but certainly not least, Headteacher Mr Sutherland and his family took part in an impressive 20.6km bike ride, followed by a range of activities in their garden, including cartwheels, table tennis and assault course laps! Mr Sutherland completed his fundraising efforts by shaving off his beard for this fundraising challenge - a fantastic contribution!
